Web Site Planning

How to start making your own web?

1. Planning

Is making a website difficult?

It's not, it's actually quite easy, although it may look daunting at first. When someone first shows you HTML , which is the code you use to make web sites, people often run off screaming, but it's very easy to learn and once you've picked it up you'll be amazed at how simple it is.

Website Planning Questions?

Can you teach yourself or do you need to go to a class? And how long would it take for a complete novice to get a web page up and running?

There are lots of great guides, and lot of great books available. I taught myself and now there are hundreds and hundreds of web sites that have loads of resources - just find some and you'll get the basics very quickly. But to make a simple basic page, probably would only take you an hour or so.

What's the first thing a person has to do when thinking about building a site?

Number one, as ever, you've got to plan the thing or Planning Web. A lot of people get very enthusiastic and say 'yeah, I'm going to make the best page ever' and don't give it enough thought. What you must do is sit down and think long and hard and decide exactly what your site is going to be about .

Usually your best bet is to make it as original as possible because it's all well and good to decide to make a web site about Manchester United but there are a thousand other sites like that already established. Unless you come up with something more unique and original then people just won't visit your site.

So the first and most important thing in website planning is to come with an idea that is new, original and represents something that you really care about.

At this stage do you have to decide what it's going to look like, where the links will be, and how it's structured?

Once you've come up with your concept the next stage is to decide on the exact content and what sections it needs to be broken up into. And the best way to do this is the simplest - get a big piece of paper and write it all down, just make lists of things you want on the site.

Once you've chosen your subject and selected the content then you should
make a Site Map . A Site Map is really just a little set of boxes showing you what is going to go where. This will help you to see that the site is well balanced - for example you don't want one section that contains a thousand pages and another that only has three! So use a Site Map to get a balanced overall view of what's going on in your site and where all the content is going to go.

The three most important things to think about when beginning a website project are:
planning, planning, planning!

Think what your site's going to be about; think what's going to make your site different to everybody else's, because there's no point replicating someone else's content or design; and also give some early thought to how you're going to promote it.

And finally be certain it's something you really care about otherwise you'll just lose interest.

Step 2 in Web Building is Web Site Production
